[POEM] You think you know

You think you know

You think you know
the soft lines around his almond eyes
because you’ve spent hours caressing his temples with your fingertips

You think you know
the bones of his ankles and the smooth of his legs
hairless up to the mid calf
because you’ve massaged them after love-making

You think you know
the thrill of that first kiss: lips and tongues and hands and bodies
meeting for the first time
because it happened every time you touched

You think you know
the sound of his laughter
loud and infectious
because you’ve heard it echo through the souls of those around him

You think you know
how his lips turn slightly downward into a slight frown
when he is thinking
because you’ve been with him for hours during those wordless thoughts.

You think you know
the way his heart breaks and fills with love
the way these hopeless romantics do
because you’ve read all his poems

You think you know
but you really have no idea
in the silence that has ripped apart the heart
by one rational decision to do the right thing

when everything that’s been done has been
right all along.
