[POEM] “we are weird”

tragedy

“we are weird”

three little words read
and a laugh, an agreement
three little words to capture
three monumental years
a lifetime of living packaged
oh so not neatly into 1,185 days
(approximately speaking)
the intensity   agony   tragedy   heartbreak
there aren’t enough descriptions

so we settled on “weird”
because that is what we are
in addition to: toxic   destructive   (or were?)
Shakespeare understands
his work a premonition
of what would play out 400 years later
(approximately speaking)

I can’t explain to anyone who asks why
it’s not like it’s been easy or fun or painless
though some of it was
when I hear my name dropped
in the context of your “friend”
I feel like we’re playing a game of Risk
and laughing as we pile up pieces
on a country that is bound to be destroyed
but we just have to see, don’t we?

and for now, all is well
and I’m happy now, sorta
and you’re happy for me, sorta
and you’re happy now, finally
and I’m happy for you, finally
and our pieces are staying put
and we, well, we’ve settled on weird
