::: my anthems :::

Here’s a small collection of songs that I call my “anthems” because they describe to a T my thoughts, emotions that I am experiencing at a certain point in time. The most recent being a the top.

Raven & the Wren – Nobody Wins (added 1 November 2015)
The blame falls on both sides… nobody wins this time
it’s too late to change your mind… nobody wins this time
caught between the black and white… nobody wins this time

Ewan McGregor & Nicole Kidman – Elephant Love Medley / We Should Be Lovers (added 21 May 2015)

[Nicole:] You, you will be mean.
[Ewan:] No, I won’t.
[Nicole:] (sigh) And I, I’ll drink all the time.
[Ewan:] We should be lovers…
[Nicole:] We can’t do that.
[Ewan:] We should be lovers! And that’s a fact.
[Nicole] Though nothing, would keep us together.
[Ewan:] We could steal time…
[Ewan & Nicole:] Just for one day.

Icona Pop – I Love It
You’re on a different road, I’m in the milky way
You want me down on earth, but I am up in space
You’re so damn hard to please, we gotta kill this switch
You’re from the 70’s, but I’m a 90’s bitch

Erin Condo – Everywhere I Go

you left a bad taste in my mouth
and a pill that I can’t swallow down
you’re with me everywhere i go
you don’t know where you’re going
i don’t know where you’ve been
i don’t know where you hang your hat these days
but you’re with me everywhere i go

you’re there each morning when i wake
and next to me with each lover that i take
you’re with me everywhere i go
but you don’t know where i’m going
you don’t care where i’ve been
you don’t how i take my drink these days
but you’re with me everywhere i go

Blossom Dearie – I Wish You Love (added February 2015)
My breaking heart and I agree
That you and I could never be
So with my best, my very best
I set you free

Carly Simon – You’re So Vain (added 3 February 2015)
you had me several years ago when I was still quite naive / well you said that we made such a pretty pair / and that you would never leave / but you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they’d be your partner
They’d be your partner, and…

You’re so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You’re so vain, I’ll bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you? don’t you?

You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and…

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear Jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well you’re where you should be all the time
And when you’re not you’re with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and…

Tom Waits – Martha (added on 13 Jan 2015)
and those were the days of roses, poetry and prose / and Martha all I had was you and all you had was me. / there was no tomorrows, we’d packed away our sorrows / and we saved them for a rainy day.

Operator, number, please: it’s been so many years
Will she remember my old voice while I fight the tears?
Hello, hello there, is this Martha? this is old Tom Frost,
And I am calling long distance, don’t worry ’bout the cost.
‘Cause it’s been forty years or more, now Martha please recall,
Meet me out for coffee, where we’ll talk about it all.

And those were the days of roses, poetry and prose
And Martha all I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows, we’d packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I feel so much older now, and you’re much older too,
How’s your husband? and how’s the kids? you know that I got married too?
Luck that you found someone to make you feel secure,
‘Cause we were all so young and foolish, now we are mature.

And I was always so impulsive, I guess that I still am,
And all that really mattered then was that I was a man.
I guess that our being together was never meant to be.
And Martha, Martha, I love you can’t you see?

And I remember quiet evenings trembling close to you…

Girlyman – Everything’s Easy
Because my life is only mine to hold / The nights are cold, and it’s snowing / In Vermont, but all that I want is here / In the clear light of the streetlight

It’s cloudy today but no rain came
I sat and waited outside
The trees in the wind were all shaking
But the storms pass us by

So I turned on the news for an hour
And Matt Lauer was shaking his head
He said that the oceans are rising
So put your children to bed

Still on most days, I hear myself say
Everything’s easy
But you never know, wherever I go
Is a way

A rocking chair, a cinnamon pear
Look up in the air, You’re a millionaire
And if I could be anywhere I could be
I’d be anywhere

Because my life is only mine to hold
The nights are cold, and it’s snowing
In Vermont, but all that I want is here
In the clear light of the streetlight

Still on most days, I hear myself say
Everything’s easy
But you never know, wherever I go
Is a way

I guess I was dreaming
The oceans were steaming
And when I started to wake up
I dreamed Derek Jeter
At bat with St. Peter
He hit a home run, and Jesus won
The pennant and cup

Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova – Falling Slowly
Take this sinking boat and point it home / we’ve still got time / raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice / you’ll make it now

I don’t know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can’t react
And games that never amount
To more than they’re meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You’ll make it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can’t go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I’m painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It’s time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice

You’ve made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I’ll sing it loud

Bruce Hornsby – Mandolin Rain
And I think about her when I hear that whistle blow
I can’t change my mind
Oh, I knew all the time that she’d go
But that’s a choice I made long ago

The song came and went
Like the times that we spent
Hiding out from the rain under the carnival tent
I laughed and she’d smile
It would last for awhile
You don’t know what you’ve got till you lose it all again

Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Oh, listen to my heart break every time she runs away
Oh, listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go

A cool evening dance
Listenin’ to the bluegrass band takes the chill
From the air until they play the last song
I’ll do my time
Oh, keeping you off my mind but there’s moments
That I find, I’m not feeling so strong

Runnin’ down by the lakeshore
She did love the sound of a summer storm
It played on the lake like a mandolin
Now it’s washing her away once again

The boat’s steaming in
Oh, I watch the sidewheel spin
And I think about her when I hear that whistle blow
I can’t change my mind
Oh, I knew all the time that she’d go
But that’s a choice I made long ago

Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go

Listen to the mandolin rain.

When I’m Gone – performed by Anna Kendrick (music video below) and originally written and performed by Lulu and the Lampshades (called You’re Gonna Miss Me, video here)

I’ve got my ticket for the long way ’round
Two bottle whiskey for the way
And I sure would like some sweet company
And I’m leaving tomorrow. What d’you say?

When I’m gone, when I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me by my hair
You’re gonna miss me everywhere, oh
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone

When I’m gone, when I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me by my walk
You’re gonna miss me by my talk, oh
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone

I’ve got my ticket for the long way ’round
The one with the prettiest of views
It’s got mountains, it’s got rivers
It’s got sights to give you shivers
But it sure would be prettier with you

Joy Ike – No Matter What (added 14 Dec 2014)

No matter what you say
I’m gonna love you anyway
You know you just come and go
People are starting to think that I’m shallow
But you need someone to love you like I do

I watch you, I wait for you, I sit here day after day for you
I watch you and I wait for you, I sit here and I pray
That you have someone to love you like I do

Alison Wedding – Let Me Pretend (added 11 Dec 2014)

I stand before you and I know what happens next
you don’t have to say a word to me.
’cause I knew the ending right from the beginning
so let me pretend one last time

that I was made to love you we were meant to be
the love you felt was deeper than the bluest sea
but the cliche gave you away
and you said nothing could destroy your promises to me
the time we shared outshone your life before me
but it’s clear it’s not truth we’re dealing with here

You stand before me while I pray
the sound of your voice fades
and I’ll no longer recognize your face
for I knew what was coming
and dove off the deep end
so confident I could stay afloat on the hope

that I was made to love you we were meant to be
the love you felt was deeper than the bluest sea
but the cliche gave you away
and you swore nothing could betray your promises to me
the time we shared outshone your life before me
but it’s clear it’s not truth we’re dealing with here

Alison Wedding  – For Will (added 8 Dec 2014)

why did you make your exit way too soon?
you didn’t take a bow
and how will I find the strength to say goodbye
when I am still at hello?
and I can’t comprehend how you felt at that moment
and I realize I might never know
but I hope you found peace my beautiful friend
and oh how I miss you so
and I won’t let your memory go

Walk Of The Earth – I Knew You Were Trouble (cover of the Taylor Swift hit)
No apologies. He’ll never see you cry,
Pretends he doesn’t know that he’s the reason why.
You’re drowning
Now I heard you moved on from whispers on the street
A new notch in your belt is all I’ll ever be
And now I see

Once upon a time a few mistakes ago
I was in your sights, you got me alone
You found me, you found me, you found me
I guess you didn’t care, and I guess I liked that
And when I fell hard you took a step back
Without me, without me, without me

And he’s long gone when he’s next to me
And I realize the blame is on me

‘Cause I knew you were trouble when you walked in
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I’d never been
‘Til you put me down,
I knew you were trouble when you walked in
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I’d never been
Now I’m lying on the cold hard ground
Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble

No apologies. He’ll never see you cry,
Pretends he doesn’t know that he’s the reason why.
You’re drowning
Now I heard you moved on from whispers on the street
A new notch in your belt is all I’ll ever be
And now I see

He was long gone when he met me
And I realize the joke is on me, yeah!

And the saddest fear comes creeping in
That you never loved me or her, or anyone, or anything,

Taylor Swift – Blank Space
“Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
‘Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game”

Nice to meet you, where you been?
I could show you incredible things
Magic, madness, heaven, sin
Saw you there and I thought
Oh my God, look at that face
You look like my next mistake
Love’s a game, wanna play?

New money, suit and tie
I can read you like a magazine
Ain’t it funny, rumors fly
And I know you heard about me
So hey, let’s be friends
I’m dying to see how this one ends
Grab your passport and my hand
I can make the bad guys good for a weekend

So it’s gonna be forever
Or it’s gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it’s over
If the high was worth the pain
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
‘Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game

‘Cause we’re young and we’re reckless
We’ll take this way too far
It’ll leave you breathless
Or with a nasty scar
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
But I’ve got a blank space, baby
And I’ll write your name

Cherry lips, crystal skies
I could show you incredible things
Stolen kisses, pretty lies
You’re the King, baby, I’m your Queen
Find out what you want
Be that girl for a month
Wait, the worst is yet to come, oh no

Screaming, crying, perfect storms
I can make all the tables turn
Rose garden filled with thorns
Keep you second guessing like
“Oh my God, who is she?”
I get drunk on jealousy
But you’ll come back each time you leave
‘Cause, darling, I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream

Boys only want love if it’s torture
Don’t say I didn’t say, I didn’t warn ya
Boys only want love if it’s torture
Don’t say I didn’t say, I didn’t warn ya

Taylor Swift – Shake It Off
“It’s like I got this music
In my mind
Saying, “It’s gonna be alright.”

I stay out too late
Got nothing in my brain
That’s what people say,
That’s what people say,

I go on too many dates
But I can’t make them stay
At least that’s what people say,
That’s what people say,

But I keep cruising
Can’t stop, won’t stop moving
It’s like I got this music
In my mind
Saying, “It’s gonna be alright.”

‘Cause the players gonna play
And the haters gonna hate
Baby, I’m just gonna shake
I shake it off, I shake it off
Heart-breakers gonna break
And the fakers gonna fake
Baby, I’m just gonna shake
I shake it off, I shake it off

I never miss a beat
I’m lightning on my feet
And that’s what they don’t see,
That’s what they don’t see,

I’m dancing on my own
I make the moves up as I go
And that’s what they don’t know,
That’s what they don’t know,

But I keep cruising
Can’t stop, won’t stop grooving
It’s like I got this music
In my mind
Saying, “It’s gonna be alright.”

Hey, hey, hey
Just think while you’ve been getting down and out about the liars and the dirty, dirty cheats of the world,
You could’ve been getting down to this sick beat.

My ex-man brought his new girlfriend
She’s like “Oh, my god!” but I’m just gonna shake.
And to the fella over there with the hella good hair
Won’t you come on over, baby? We can shake, shake, shake

Joy Ike – The Fall Song

“jump into this puddle and ruin your jeans
Or come on we can huddle as we stomp on these leaves.
Doesn’t really matter as long as you walk with me!”

You were walking down my side of the street
Humming to yourself and kicking the leaves and singing,
“Girl, come out and walk with me!”

And I put my sweater and I ran out the door
And I came up with this song soon as I hit the floor and you sang,
“Girl, come out and walk with me!”

And we sang,
“Fall wash over me
I hear our feet, feet and it makes me free
Fall wash over me
I hear our beat, beat on the ground and it makes me sing.”

You said, “jump into this puddle and ruin your jeans
Or come on we can huddle as we stomp on these leaves.
Doesn’t really matter as long as you walk with me!”

Dixie Chicks – Not Ready to Make Nice
Forgive, sounds good, forget, I’m not sure I could. They say time heals everything, but I’m still waiting

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I’m still waiting

I’m through with doubt
There’s nothing left for me to figure out
I’ve paid a price
And I’ll keep paying

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I know you said
Can’t you just get over it
It turned my whole world around
And I kind of like it

I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don’t mind sayin’
It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

What it is you think I should

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I’m still waiting

Dawn Landis – I Won’t Back Down

Well I won’t back down, no I won’t back down
You could stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won’t back down

Gonna stand my ground, won’t be turned around
And I’ll keep this world from draggin’ me down
Gonna stand my ground and I won’t back down

Hey baby, there ain’t no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
And I won’t back down

Well I know what’s right, I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin’ me around
But I’ll stand my ground and I won’t back down

Hey baby there ain’t no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
And I won’t back down
No, I won’t back down

Sara Gazarek & Josh Nelson (added 26 Sept. 2014)
performing a stunning, heartbreaking, beautiful version of Billy Joel’s As So It Goes. Everything about this song and this performance makes my insides do flip-flops.

In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along

I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense

And every time I’ve held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose

But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break

And this is why my eyes are closed
It’s just as well for all I’ve seen
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you’re the only one who knows

So I would choose to be with you
That’s if the choice were mine to make
But you can make decisions too
And you can have this heart to break

And so it goes, and so it goes
And you’re the only one who knows

Demi Lovato – Really Don’t Care (3 Sept 2014)

You wanna play, you wanna stay, you wanna have it all
You started messing with my head until I hit a wall
Maybe I should’ve known, maybe I should’ve known
That you would walk, you would walk out the door, hey!

Said we were done, then met someone and rubbed it in my face
Cut to the part, she broke your heart, and then she ran away
I guess you should’ve known, I guess you should’ve known
That I would talk, I would talk

But even if the stars and moon collide
I never want you back into my life
You can take your words and all your lies
Oh oh oh I really don’t care
Even if the stars and moon collide
I never want you back into my life
You can take your words and all your lies
Oh oh oh I really don’t care
Oh oh oh I really don’t care

I can’t believe I ever stayed up writing songs about you
You don’t deserve to know the way I used to think about you
Oh no not anymore, oh no not anymore
You had your shot, had your shot, but you let go

Now if we meet out on the street I won’t be running scared
I’ll walk right up to you and put one finger in the air
And make you understand, and make you understand
You had your chance, had your chance

But even if the stars and moon collide
I never want you back into my life
You can take your words and all your lies
Oh oh oh I really don’t care
Even if the stars and moon collide
I never want you back into my life
You can take your words and all your lies
Oh oh oh I really don’t care
Oh oh oh I really don’t care

[Cher Lloyd]
Yeah, listen up
Hey, hey, never look back,
Dumb struck boy, ego intact
Look boy, why you so mad
Second guessin’, but should’ve hit that
Hey Demi, you picked the wrong lover
Should’ve picked that one, he’s cuter than the other
I just wanna laugh, cause you’re tryna be a hipster
Kick him to the curb, take a Polaroid picture

But even if the stars and moon collide
I never want you back into my life
You can take your words and all your lies
Oh oh oh I really don’t care
Even if the stars and moon collide
I never want you back into my life
You can take your words and all your lies
Oh oh oh I really don’t care
Oh oh oh I really don’t care

Bastille – Pompeii

I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
You’ve been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose is the dust settled around us

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Gray clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Gray clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
